A 19th-century legend says that
Truth and Lie met once. The Lie greeted the Truth by telling her, "Today is
a good day." The Truth looked around, looking at the sky, and indeed the
day was good.
They spent some time together
until they reached a large well of water. The Lie lowered her hand into the
water and turned to the Truth. "Pleasant and warm water," she said,
"if you want, can we swim together?"
The Truth was incredulous again.
She put her hand in the water and the water was really pleasant. For a while, they
swam when suddenly the Lie came out of the well, put on the clothes of the
Truth, and disappeared.
The Truth was angry and came out
naked. She started running around looking for Lies to get her clothes on. The
world that saw she naked turned away because of shame and anger. Poor Truth,
ashamed, turned to the well, and disappeared there forever.
Since then, the Lie travels all
over the world dressed as the Truth. All satisfied with the existing order. And
the world in no way wants to see the naked Truth.
